NEW YORK (1010 WINS/WCBS 880) – A crash on the Cross Island Parkway in Whitestone, in which a Mazda overturned and Honda crashed, killed five people early New Year’s Day, authorities said.
Emergency personnel responded to the scene around 6 a.m. and found a flipped Mazda and a wrecked Honda in the Bronx-bound lanes of Cross Island Parkway, near the entrance to the Whitestone Bridge, officials said.
This section of the parkway is referred to as "dead man's curve."
Including the driver, five occupants of the Mazda were found dead on the scene, police said.
The death toll of the crash was initially reported as four, but investigators later discovered another body, police said.
Officials said that the driver of the Honda was taken to Booth Memorial Hospital for treatment. The extent of the driver’s injuries is unclear.
A police spokesperson said that the crime scene was very involved, and would “take time to reconstruct.”
The NYPD’s Collision Investigation Squad is investigating the cause of the crash.
