NEW YORK (1010 WINS) – Two teens were indicted for striking a 7-year-old girl during a shooting in front of a Starbucks in Harlem last month, prosecutors announced on Monday.
Daniel Idowu, 19, and True Womack, 17, were charged with attempted murder, assault and criminal possession of a weapon, according to Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg, Jr.
According to court documents, on Nov. 11, around 2:52 p.m., Idowu and Womack, dressed in all black with face coverings, walked south on Bradhurst Avenue in Hamilton Heights. They stopped across the street from a Starbucks near West 145th Street, where several people were standing outside.
Both defendants took out a firearm and shot several times towards the individuals, striking a 7-year-old girl, who was walking past the Starbucks. The victim was struck in the stomach, and was hospitalized with injuries to her stomach, liver, and colon that required surgery.
Idowu and Womack allegedly fled north on Bradhurst Avenue, through Jackie Robinson Park, and onto Edgecombe Avenue. Witnesses called 911, and officers arrived within minutes, chasing the pair.
During the chase, Idowu allegedly tried to jump over a fence into the park and threw a gun into the park. Officers caught and arrested them. The gun was recovered by officers. The next morning, officers searched the park again and recovered another firearm.
"Thankfully, the child lived and brave police officers were able to act quickly to apprehend these defendants and prevent them from causing further harm," Bragg said. "Children are among our most vulnerable New Yorkers and deserve to be safe from the very real, oftentimes deadly, consequences of gun violence. In Manhattan we will continue holding accountable those who commit these violent acts. I wish the victim a speedy recovery."
