3 killed in fires across Bronx, Manhattan and Queens; e-bike battery sparked one

NEW YORK (1010 WINS) — Three people were killed in fires in the Bronx, Manhattan and Queens, and investigators blame a lithium-ion battery for sparking the deadly Bronx blaze, authorities said Friday.

Around midnight, fire officials responded to reports of a fire on the third floor at a building located at 2264 Beaumont Ave. in Belmont.

Upon arrival, firefighters pulled a 34-year-old man from the blaze. EMS transported him to St. Barnabas Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

A 56-year-old man was taken to NYC Health + Hospitals/Jacobi in stable condition. Two firefighters also suffered minor injuries and taken to St. Barnabas Hospital for treatment. Approximately 10 people are displaced.

Hazmat were required for removal of a lithium ion battery, fire officials said.

A 64-year-old man also died overnight in a fire at a NYCHA housing complex on the Upper West Side, according to fire officials.

The blaze broke out at about 9:20 p.m. at the Douglass Houses located 850 Columbus Ave., near 103rd Street.

About 78 firefighters and EMS personnel responded to the fire on the top floor of the nine-story building.

The victim was transported to Mount Sinai Morningside Hospital in critical condition, and later died, police said.

Two firefighters also suffered minor injuries.

The cause is currently under investigation by fire marshals.

And on Thursday morning, a 56-year-old woman was killed in a house fire in Queens, officials said.

It happened just before 8:45 a.m. at 195-1 Hollis Ave. in St. Albans.

Authorities said the woman was trapped on the second floor when fire broke out.

She was discovered unconscious and pronounced dead at the scene.

There were no other injuries were reported.
