NEW YORK (BLOOMBERG) — Jefferies Financial Group Inc.’s offices in Manhattan were evacuated Friday as a fire broke out at the Papillon restaurant.
Early Friday morning, the city’s fire department received a call about a fire in the restaurant that was being fed by gas, a fire department spokesperson said. The emergency prompted the bank to shut its headquarters at 520 Madison Ave., according to a company spokesperson.
More than 200 people were evacuated from the building, according to John Corcoran, a deputy assistant chief for the city’s fire department. About four civilians had minor injuries, while a fifth was transported to a nearby hospital, the spokesperson said.
The blaze was under control around 9:30 a.m. in New York. The exact cause of the fire is still under investigation.
No Jefferies employees were harmed, according to a person familiar with the situation, who asked not to be identified discussing private matters. The city warned of disruptions in the area of Madison Avenue and East 53rd Street.
