NEW YORK (1010 WINS) — The $50,000 Crime Stoppers reward, which was offered during the immediate manhunt for the arrest of the Brooklyn subway shooter, will now be split among several members of the public, according to the NYPD.
Following the shooting at the 36th Street Station in Sunset Park on Tuesday morning, the department said it appealed to the public for assistance in locating the alleged subway shooter, Frank R. James, and several came forward with "timely, accurate information" that led to his arrest nearly 30 hours after the incident.
Members of the NYPD's Detective Bureau identified five people who are credited with James' arrest. Now, those individuals will split the combined reward, comprised of contributions from the Police Foundation, the MTA and the TWU Local 100.
"Thanks to the help of these five good Samaritans, the NYPD was able to do its job and get a dangerous suspect off the streets just hours after his picture was released," said New York City Mayor Eric Adams.
He added, "The bravery of these five individuals are what truly make New York City the greatest city in the world. Thank you to the MTA, the Transport Workers Union Local 100, and the New York City Police Foundation for providing this $50,000 reward."
The department did not publicly identify who received the reward. However, Commissioner Keechant L. Sewell said they "appreciate" those who did lead to James' capture in Lower Manhattan.
"We urged the public to join us in this effort to find this suspect, and New Yorkers stepped up," she added.
The praise for the five individuals that led to James' arrest came hours after Adams honored the MTA workers who responded with "bravery" in the immediate aftermath of Tuesday's shooting.
