NEW YORK (1010 WINS) — A Centers for Disease Control study of wastewater in 13 counties in and around New York City found 8% of samples tested positive for polio, the agency announced Friday.
Only one case has been confirmed in the area so far, an unvaccinated Rockland County man, but the new study indicates the virus has spread throughout the region.
Between March 9 and Oct. 11, CDC scientists teste 1,076 wastewater samples from 48 sites, 89 of which tested positive.
The virus was genetically linked to the Rockland County Man’s infection in 82 of the 89 positive samples.
The CDC is asking anyone unvaccinated in the area to complete their polio series as soon as possible.
