NEW YORK (1010 WINS/WCBS 880) -- Nine firefighters were injured as a windswept fire tore through attached homes in Queens on Tuesday night.
None of the injuries were life-threatening, according to FDNY Chief of Department John Hodgens. No civilians were hurt.
The fire broke out around 9:45 p.m. in Woodside and ripped through two sets of attached homes on 59th Street, just south of 37th Avenue.
More than 200 fire personnel and 50 units responded to the scene, extending ladders and laying hoses.
Windy weather “contributed to the rapid spread of the fire,” Hodgens said.
An investigation into the cause of the fire is ongoing, but investigators believe the flames started in the rear of the buildings. They don't believe it was sparked by e-bike batteries, which have plagued the department recently.
A total of 18 people were displaced after their homes were gutted. They were being assisted by the Red Cross.
