NEW YORK (1010 WINS) — After two seasons on the New York Jets, it appears unlikely that quarterback Aaron Rodgers will be returning to the team, according to multiple reports that circulated hours before Super Bowl LIX.
Rodgers, 41, reportedly flew back to New Jersey last week to meet with new Jets head coach Aaron Glenn and general manager Darren Mougey. FOX Sports reported that Rodgers was told during the meeting that the team was moving on from him.
FOX Sports reporter Jay Glazer posted on social media about the news, dubbing the discovery “big scoopage.” Glazer said that if he does indeed leave the Jets, Rodgers will be given a June 1 designation, allowing him to sign with any team in the league on March 12.
“Given that Aaron made the effort to fly back to discuss his future, all signs point to him continuing to play,” Glazer wrote. “It just won’t be for the Jets.”
Sources confirmed the news to ESPN’s Adam Schefter on Sunday.
At an introductory news conference on Jan. 27, Glenn was noncommittal about Rodgers’ future with the Jets, stating that he wanted to meet with him before any decisions were made about the team’s quarterback.
“If you are going to continue to ask me the same question, I’m going to give you the same answer,” Glenn said. “We’re still in evaluation mode.”
Rodgers was with the Jets for two seasons, the first of which was derailed by a highly publicized Achilles tear in his first game on the team in September 2023. He started in 18 games during his second season, six of which were victories, but the team missed the playoffs.
