NEW YORK (1010 WINS) -- Mayor Eric Adams suggested at a press conference in Chicago that he’s considering dropping college requirements to join the NYPD in order to attract more recruits.

The NYPD currently requires recruits to have at least 60 college credits and a 2.0 grade point average before joining the academy.

Adams, who is a former NYPD captain, praised Mayor Lori Lightfoot’s decision to drop a similar requirement in Chicago at a joint press conference with her that followed a closed-door meeting.

“I like what the mayor is doing in the recruitment. We’re hearing all over the country that there is a requirement problem with police officers,” said Adams. “We’re going to look to duplicate that in New York City.”

Lightfoot’s policy requires new Chicago Police Department recruits who don’t have college credits to have work experience in certain trade or public service industries like healthcare, education or security.

Adams’ push for more police recruits comes as he seeks to cut 10,200 city employees across all city agencies except the police department in his preliminary budget proposal.
