NEW YORK (1010 WINS) — Mayor Eric Adams took a trip to Washington, D.C. on Friday for a “New York-centered” White House meeting with President Donald Trump and his team to discuss the city’s goals and to “establish real communication,” the mayor said.
Adams noted several issues that were up for discussion in a video statement following the 3 p.m. sit-down, including an offshore New York wind farm project that could be abandoned if federal officials do not allow construction to resume, and possible manufacturing investments. Among ideas regarding the manufacturing sector, the mayor pointed to the possibility of NYC developing its own computer chips.
“At the heart of this was to establish real communication, that’s our goal,” Adams said. “New York City is important to America, and what happens here in Washington, D.C. is important to New York.”
The meeting also included discussion of critical infrastructure projects and the preservation of essential social services, and ultimately “laid a strong foundation for continued discussions about New York City’s top priorities,” Adams said.
The friendly relationship between Adams and the president has been a source of great scrutiny, with criticism reaching a peak after the Trump Justice Department secured the dismissal of federal corruption charges against the embattled mayor, who was accused of wire fraud, bribery and conspiracy.
The basis of the dismissal was hinged on Adams’ inability to properly enforce the president’s public safety agenda while under indictment, specifically in regards to new Trump-era immigration policies.
Adams—who is currently mounting a mayoral reelection campaign as an independent— has remained steadfast in his innocence and has denied a quid pro quo with the Trump administration.
The mayor stated that he is hopeful the administrations can meet again in the coming weeks to continue making progress.
“A good leader finds common ground to get things done, and that’s why I remain committed to working with this administration wherever collaboration helps make New York City the best place in the world to raise a family,” Adams said.
