NEW YORK (1010 WINS) — Attorney General Letitia James announced Sunday that her office will be investigating the fatal police shooting of an allegedly armed man in Brooklyn earlier this week.

James' office will probe the NYPD shooting of Brian Astarita, who was killed on Thursday on the Belt Parkway after he rammed into a cruiser that attempted to pull him over for speeding around 4 p.m.

After the crash, Astarita continued driving until he was successfully pulled over — at which point allegedly exited his vehicle with a firearm and advanced toward officers, police said. After several verbal commands from officers to drop the gun, the cops fired at Astarita, fatally striking him, police said.

Sources have told multiple outlets that the incident appeared to be a "suicide-by-cop."

James' office is legally required to investigate whenever an on- and off-duty law enforcement officers in the state "may have caused the death of a person, by an act or omission," according to state law.
