NEW YORK (1010 WINS) -- New York City mayoral candidate Andrew Yang rushed to a photojournalist's aid after a man attacked him on the Staten Island Ferry Friday morning, according to reports.
Getty Images photographer Spencer Platt was on the ferry documenting the former Democratic presidential candidate's tour of the borough around 11:15 a.m. on Friday when a passenger approached him and shoved him, the Staten Island Advance reported.
As the passenger raised an object that looked like a metal pole in an apparent attempt to hit Platt, Yang ran over and helped diffuse the situation, the outlet reported.
"I got up and tried to intervene as quickly as I could. I'm thrilled that when he turned, he saw me and recognized me, and the situation deescalated quickly," Yang told the outlet.
"I think most people would have had the same impulse I had," he added.
Two NYPD officers took the passenger into custody soon after the incident, THE CITY reported.
Platt told the Advance he was "really grateful" to Yang and his team for their help.
"They came running out, Yang in the lead," he said. "If they hadn't jumped up and ran out, he would've clocked me, definitely."
