NEW YORK (1010 WINS) — The New York City Parks Department shut down Rockaway Beach on Saturday due to a shark sighting.

It’s the second time this week a shark sighting has shut down Rockaway Beach, and other beaches in New York City and Long Island have faced similar issues.

Gov. Kathy Hochul on Monday ordered state agencies to increase shark patrols due to a string of attacks and sightings this summer.

The Parks Department tweeted at 2:14 p.m. on Saturday that the beach would close, but specified concessions and the boardwalk would remain open.

That was probably cold comfort to the hot swimmers who were denied the cool embrace of the ocean as the heatwave in New York drags on.

The heat advisory from the National Weather Service for New York City is in effect until Sunday at 8 p.m.
