NEW YORK (1010 WINS) — At least 18 children were injured in a fire at a daycare run out of a Queens basement Wednesday afternoon, according to the FDNY, NYPD and Department of Buildings.
The fire department received the call around 2:04 p.m. and rushed to a two-story residential building on 72nd Drive near 147th Street in Kew Gardens, officials said.
DOB inspectors, who investigated the building after the fire, said they found a daycare and dental office in the basement.
Seventeen of the children suffered minor injuries and one was seriously injured, according to the FDNY. The DOB said 22 people were injured, citing first responders.
EMS rushed the child with serious injuries to an area hospital in critical condition.
The FDNY sent 60 firefighters and EMS responders across 12 units. The firefighters got the blaze under control by around 2:44 p.m.
The FDNY said an e-bike may have started the fire, though fire marshals are still investigating.
The DOB issued two citations to the property owner, one for construction work in the basement done without permits, the other for an occupancy violation. The department also issued a vacate order to all occupants of the building.
The American Red Cross offered relocation services to residents of the building who were displaced by the fire.
