NEW YORK (1010 WINS) – Audacy hosted "Hispanic Voices in Politics & Government," a town hall pegged to Hispanic Heritage Month.
The panel featured Marjorie Velázquez, vice president of Policy for Tech: NYC, and Norberto Briceño, director of Social Media at Voto Latino. WINS anchor Kevin Rincon moderated the panel.
Velázquez mainly highlighted the importance of unity and representation. "The Latino goal is not a monolith,” she said. “It is diverse because we come from several different countries. We come from different backgrounds. But what really unites us is our Latinidad. It is our representation. And I think that we need to do better in owning that space. And whenever you have an opportunity to be in a room, it is creating that environment where it is a safe space, especially when it comes to our communities."
Briceño focused on the role of education in empowering voters, saying, "By giving them that understanding, by giving them how policies succeed and fail in Congress, it's imperative to let them know all of these things because then that's what gives them more power to vote... At Voto Latino, what we like to do, yes, on one hand, we talk to the influencers and to the celebrities and they do their PSAs and they do, you know, they let people know that they're going to be able to get their own resources."
