Christian Cordero-Gotay, 29, had pleaded guilty to possession of a machine gun and possession of ammunition by a convicted felon. He also pleaded guilty  to possession of a machine gun not registered to him in the National Firearms Registration and Transfer Record.

He was sentenced to 30 months in prison Tuesday, along with three years of supervised release.

According to court docs, on Aug. 31, 2020, officers in Clinton Township, New Jersey stopped Cordero-Gotay’s vehicle, which he was driving with Genesis Bertefabian, 28.

Officers said they detected the scent of burnt marijuana coming from the car. After a search of the vehicle, officers found a loaded Glock magazine under the driver’s seat.

Officers tried to arrest the two, but Cordero-Gotay resisted arrest, while Bertefabian got in the car and drove away, court documents said.

Shortly after, officials said Bertefabian crashed into the side of a building, exited the vehicle and walked into a wooded area. Law enforcement searched the area, where they found Bertefabian, as well as a semi-automatic Glock.

Officials said the gun was fitted with a conversion device, which has the ability to turn the pistol into a machine gun. A search warrant for the vehicle revealed two high-capacity magazines loaded with 9mm ammo.

Bertefabian has been charged with illegal possession of a machine gun and possession of an unregistered firearm, but their charges remained pending.
