NEW YORK (1010 WINS) — New York City is ready to celebrate Black History Month with a plethora of activities organized by the city as well as other well-known city institutions!

From The Victoria To The Village: A Visual History Of Black Creative Spaces
Feb. 1
Celebrate the opening of The Apollo’s Victoria with this visual exploration of Black artists and creativity from the 1950s through the early 2000s.

African and African American Studies Black History Month Lecture
Feb. 1
Merle Collins, a poet, novelist, filmmaker, scholar, and professor emerita at the University of Maryland, College Park, will discuss her new work on Louise Langdon Norton Little, UNIA activist and mother of Malcolm X.

NYPL's Black History Month - A Read-a-Loud
Feb. 2
Stop by the Teen Center for a fun after-school story time and learn about Black musical artists throughout history.

Video Games: The Great Connector
Feb. 3
Harlem Gallery of Science launches a new pop-up exhibition with the goal of inspiring Black and Latinx youth and the adults in their lives to explore the academic and career opportunities in the rapidly expanding global digital gaming industry.

Council Member Nantasha Williams' Black History Month Celebration
Feb. 3
An annual BHM Celebration spotlighting African-American history with this year's theme, "African-Americans and the Arts" filled with captivating performances, insightful presentations, and unity.

Hidden Voices: Black History Month - Session 1
Feb. 6
Students will learn about three Black New Yorkers whose lives and legacies continue to shape the collective history and identity in the city.

Hidden Voices: Black History Month - Session 2

Students in grades 3 - 5 can join other students in a live Zoom Webinar led by Museum Educators to learn about three Black New Yorkers.

NYPL's Black History Month Collections Scavenger Hunt

The Soundview Library will host a scavenger hunt for children to learn about Black History month by sampling books and CDs. All participants will win a prize for completion.

Feb. 9

Painting with Soul
Feb. 10
Staten Island Community Alliance is hosting a convocation of a historical Libation Ceremony to acknowledge ancestors, a drum circle, as well as painting with soul, a self-guided paint project.

The Rhythms & Movements of African American Culture Festival
Feb. 12-18
Seven days and 16 performances of a fusion of African music genres and dance forms for all ages to enjoy.

Chef Talk: Denzell Washington
Feb. 15

Join the Office of the Public Advocate for a special celebration of Black advocacy in New York City to uplift Black advocates who are creating social change.

NYPL's Black History Month Celebration: Omeros

To celebrate this year the Roosevelt Island Library will be discussing Derek Walcott's Omeros, a St. Lucian take on Homeric epic poetry.

Admiration: Black History Month
Feb. 29
Pier 57 hosts a panel featuring renowned artists including Guy Stanley Philoche, Voodo Fe and Zaire Baptise who will share their insights on black culture and history through their captivating art.
