NEW YORK (1010 WINS) — A 14-year-old student was arrested Thursday morning after he allegedly tried to bring a gun into his Brooklyn high school, police said.

Authorities said they do not know if the gun he brought to Automotive High School in Williamsburg was loaded and if he has been charged.
The New York Daily News reports school safety grabbed the teen after the .38-caliber pistol was detected during a screening of his backpack at about 8:30 a.m.
He was then taken into custody without incident.
Thursday's incident came a week after five students were caught bringing guns into Queens, Bronx and Brooklyn schools within two days.
Mayor Bill de Blasio announced Monday an increase in the number of random metal detectors at some public schools as well as other precautionary measures.
De Blasio again cited the pandemic for causing a "national phenomenon" of students bringing guns to school campuses.
"It's very troubling," he said during his Thursday news conference. "COVID unleashed a lot of things. We saw a lot of what was normal in our society suspended. We saw a lot of young people turn to guns. This is a very troubling reality that we have to fix and we can fix it as we've seen."
The NYC School Safety Coalition group urged for more action to protect students on Twitter.
"We are sick and tired of our children’s safety being jeopardized by woke politicians," they tweeted. "This FULLY LOADED GUN was found at Automotive high school in Brooklyn this morning. This is a scanning school. We need to hire more School Safety Agents, more scanners, and metal detectors."
