NEW YORK (1010 WINS/WCBS 880) -- A 15-year-old Bronx boy who was fatally shot in the borough last week donated his organs to save the lives of multiple recipients, organ donation advocates said Thursday.
Josue Lopez-Ortega “became an organ donor hero after he generously gave the gift of life to those in need,” said Leonard Achan, the president of LiveOnNY, a nonprofit that supports organ donation.
Lopez-Ortega saved the lives of eight people, Achan said.
“LiveOnNY is humbled and honored to be the stewards of these precious gifts on behalf of Josue and his family so that he and others may Live On,” Achan said.
“We extend our deepest condolences to his family and friends. Our thoughts and prayers remain with them during this difficult time,” he said.
Lopez-Ortega was shot last Thursday night while leaving the Police Athletic League on Longwood Avenue in Longwood.
He suffered a wound to his head and was pronounced dead at NYC Health + Hospitals/Lincoln.
A 16-year-old boy who was struck in the leg during the shooting suffered non-life-threatening injuries.

Police believe the shooter parked a Jeep nearby and fired into a group of people leaving the youth recreation center, striking Lopez-Ortega and the other teen.
The shooter fled in the Jeep and was last seen headed eastbound on Longwood Avenue, according to police.
The NYPD released surveillance images of the Jeep last week as the search for the killer continues.
