NEW YORK (1010 WINS/WCBS 880) -- A 13-year-old boy was fighting for his life Wednesday after nearly drowning in Prospect Park Lake on Tuesday evening.

The boy was in grave condition at New York-Presbyterian Brooklyn Methodist Hospital after he was pulled from the water around 5:30 p.m.

He and several other kids were playing with a turtle on the southern shore of the lake when he went under, according to witnesses.

A number of people called 911, leading to a large FDNY and NYPD response.

"All I saw was the kids sitting over there in that corner crying, cops surrounding them," said witness Zieeda Clarke. "I also saw a kid on a stretcher, and they were pumping his chest."

The lake is not considered safe for swimming, and signs in the area warn people not to enter or drink the water.
