NEW YORK (1010 WINS/WCBS 880) – A Bronx man was indicted on Wednesday for allegedly stabbing his ex-girlfriend outside of her Washington Heights apartment last month, prosecutors said.
Tyquane Jemmott, 33, was charged with one count of murder in the second degree for allegedly stabbing his ex-girlfriend, 29-year-old Shirley Rodriguez, Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg announced.
According to court documents, Rodriguez broke up with Jemmott in early May after they had been dating for nearly two years. On May 20, Jemmott allegedly waited outside of the victim’s apartment building for over two hours hiding behind his car until she came out of the building at around 5:30 a.m. An Uber was waiting outside to take her to work, prosecutors said.
Before she could get in, Jemmott allegedly jumped out from where he was hiding and ran to Rodriguezand stabbed her multiple times before he ran away from the scene.
Rodriguez was able to buzz her apartment, and when her mother, father, and sister came downstairs, she told her sister, “Ty did this to me,” according to court documents.
Police responded to the scene and found her unconscious and unresponsive with multiple stab wounds about the body. She was taken to NYC Health and Hospitals/Harlem where she was later pronounced deceased.
“As alleged, after waiting for hours outside of Shirley Rodriguez’s home, Tyquane Jemmott sprung from behind a car the moment she stepped outside and took her life in a flurry of stab wounds,” said District Attorney Bragg. “Shirley Rodriguez was beloved by her family, including her mother, father, and sister who so tragically had to hear this young woman’s final words as she succumbed to her injuries. My thoughts are with them as they continue to grieve her loss.”
Jemmott was arrested at a family member’s apartment building in the Bronx later that afternoon.
