NEW YORK (1010 WINS/WCBS 880) -- A fire raged in a seven-story apartment building in Bushwick Tuesday morning, injuring five people.
The FDNY received a call at 4:48 a.m. reporting a fire on the second floor of an apartment building on Menahan Street and Central Avenue, according to the FDNY.
Twelve units – 60 fire and EMS personnel – responded to the fire.
Five people were treated for smoke inhalation with three being transported to Wyckoff Heights Medical Center and two to New York-Presbyterian/Weill Cornell Medical Center, said the FDNY.
Three of those injured were in the same apartment on the second floor and were reported to be in critical condition. The two other people affected by smoke inhalation were on the fifth floor.
The FDNY confirmed that there was a lithium-ion battery found at the scene of the fire. The batteries have been blamed for more than 170 fires in 2023 that injured at least 96 people and killed at least 14 more, according to the FDNY.
The exact cause of the fire is still under investigation.
