NEW YORK (1010 WINS/WCBS 880) – A Bath Beach man was sentenced to three to nine years in prison for causing a car crash while fleeing police that resulted in one of his passengers dying, according to the Brooklyn District Attorney’s Office.
Ackeem Chambers, 20, was sentenced to three to nine years in prison for second-degree manslaughter on Wednesday after pleading guilty to the charge last month.
In February 2022 the defendant was driving “erratically” in a 2015 Hyundai Sonata on Eastern Parkway with three passengers, a temporary Texas license plate and “excessively tinted windows,” the district attorney’s office said.
NYPD Officers attempted a traffic stop, but Chambers sped up and ran a red light at Eastern Parkway and Rogers Avenue, colliding into a 2007 Toyota Solara. The defendant’s car spun and struck a streetlight before airbags opened.
Jada Rollins, 18, was taken to Kings County Hospital and pronounced dead. A 20-year-old passenger suffered severe head trauma. The other passenger, and Chambers, were also taken to the hospital and treated for minor injuries, officials said.
According to investigators, the driver was going 62.7 miles per hour before the crash and did not deploy his brakes.
“This defendant’s recklessness behind the wheel and complete disregard for public safety cost an innocent young woman her life and seriously injured several others. He has now been held accountable and my office will continue to prosecute crimes involving vehicular violence to ensure the safety of Brooklyn’s streets,” Brooklyn District Attorney Eric Gonzalez said.
