NEW YORK (1010 WINS) – A burglar nearly got away with $1.5 million in jewelry from the Macy’s store in Downtown Brooklyn—but he was stopped during his escape by a shrewd employee, police said Wednesday.

Surveillance footage from the NYPD shows the suspect inside the store at 422 Fulton St. during the would-be heist on Monday night.

According to police, the suspect entered earlier in the day and then waited for the store to close.

He then concealed the pricey jewelry in a suitcase and at tempted to flee, police said.

But as he was leaving, a store employee confronted him and he abandoned the suitcase, ultimately taking off empty-handed.

No injuries were reported.

The Macy's store on Fulton Street is set to close in the coming months as part of the retailer's “Bold New Chapter” strategy, which will close 150 underperforming stores to focus on the best-performing stores.

Anyone with information is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-577-TIPS.
