NEW YORK (1010 WINS) — A Brooklyn man was arrested and charged with driving while intoxicated after a crash that killed his 23-year-old passenger, the NYPD said Tuesday.
Jovanni Padilla, 26, of East New York, was speeding east on Saratoga Avenue, at the intersection of Sutter Avenue in Brownsville, in a 2017 Nissan Maxima around 6:30 a.m. on Saturday when he collided with a driver traveling south on Sutter Avenue in a 2002 Kia SUV, police said.
The crash's impact sent the Nissan flying into two parked, unoccupied cars, the NYPD said.
Kainen Martin, a 23-year-old Bronx resident who was riding in Padilla's car, was ejected from the vehicle when it crashed, police said. Martin was taken to a nearby hospital and passed away on Sunday, the NYPD said.
Both Padilla and the 55-year-old man driving the Kia SUV were hospitalized with minor injuries, police said.
Padilla was arrested about an hour after the crash, the NYPD said. He faces charges including assault, leaving the scene of an accident with serious injury, vehicular assault, driving while intoxicated, reckless driving and driving without a license, the department said.
His attorney information wasn't immediately available Tuesday.
