NEW YORK (1010 WINS/WCBS 880) -- A woman involved in a fender bender in the Bronx on Tuesday afternoon called her boyfriend, who showed up at the crash scene and stabbed a bystander to death, police said.

The deadly road-rage altercation happened shortly before 4:30 p.m. at Phelan Place and West Tremont Avenue in the Morris Heights section.

Two cars were involved in a minor crash that barely damaged the vehicles, police said.

One of the drivers, a woman, called her boyfriend, who showed up moments later and began punching uninvolved bystanders who had gathered at the scene, according to police.

As some point during the chaotic encounter, the boyfriend pulled a knife and stabbed one bystander in the chest, police said.

The victim—identified as Ronald Gomez-Mesa, 29, of Morris Heights—was rushed to St. Barnabas Hospital by EMS, but he ultimately died from his injuries.

It's unclear what exactly led up to the stabbing; there are reports the victim may have intervened as tempers flared.

The boyfriend fled after the stabbing and was last seen running down West Burnside Avenue, police said.

The knife used in the killing was recovered at the scene, according to cops.

No other serious injuries were immediately reported.

No arrests had been reported Wednesday as the investigation continued. Police were reviewing surveillance video that captured much of the altercation.
