NEW YORK (1010 WINS) — A 7-month-old baby is dead after being struck in the head by a stray bullet in Brooklyn on Wednesday afternoon, police confirmed.
NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch updated the public on the investigation Wednesday evening, and said that video from the scene shows two suspects riding a moped north on Humboldt Street at about 1:20 p.m. when, upon approaching Moore Street, the rear passenger pulls out a gun and discharges at least two rounds toward the southwest corner of the intersection.
Several adults, two strollers and multiple other children were nearby at the time shots were fired, Tisch said. The 7-month-old baby girl was inside one of the strollers when she was struck.
Police said that the infant’s father grabbed her and ran toward NYC Health + Hospital/Woodhull, where she was pronounced dead at 1:46 p.m.
The shooting is currently believed to be gang-related, with the young victim being an unintended target.
Surveillance footage shows the moped continue north on Humboldt Street after the shooting, turn onto Siegel Street and crash into an oncoming car at Manhattan Avenue, Tisch said.
Both men were thrown from the scooter in the crash, with the rear passenger landing so hard on the pavement he lost both of his shoes, which were recovered by police.
A 911 call made at 1:25 p.m. requested medics for an injured man at the crash scene, and the rear passenger was taken by medics to Brooklyn Hospital, officials said.
Police believe he fits the description of the shooter, based on his clothing and appearance, and he is in custody in connection to an unrelated domestic violence robbery investigation. Detectives are working to determine his involvement in the shooting, Tisch said.
The outstanding suspect is described as a young man wearing light gray pants and a white t-shirt with a black surgical mask over his lower face.
He was last seen fleeing toward the Marcy Houses, police said.
“Right now he is the subject of a massive NYPD manhunt, and all New York City police officers have a very clear picture of this outstanding suspect on their phones,” the police commissioner said.
Anyone with information is asked to call 911 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-577-TIPS.
Mayor Zohran Mamdani joined Tisch and other law enforcement officials at Wednesday's press conference to offer his condolences to the family and remind New Yorkers of the amount of work that still needs to be done to combat gun violence in the city.
"Let us recommit to building a city where no parent has to endure this kind of a tragedy, that no family knows the anguish that this family here in Brooklyn is reckoning with today," the mayor said.
