NEW YORK (1010 WINS) — They're cute, furry and cuddly. That's the problem with guinea pigs, according to some animal rights activists.

Allie Taylor, the president of Voters for Animal Rights, said too many people buy them impulsively.

"Because they're sensitive animals with very complex needs, families often surrender them to animal shelters or rescues after the novelty wears off," she said.

The New York City Council is now considering banning the sale of guinea pigs in pet stores.

A hearing for the legislation was planned for Wednesday, with New Yorkers expected to testify virtually or in person.

Taylor said that nearly 800 animals have been surrendered to local animal shelters this year alone, with many more abandoned or found dead in parks across the city.

"The animal shelters here are already underfunded and overwhelmed," she added.

Instead, Taylor encourages people to consider adopting them from city shelters.
