NEW YORK (1010 WINS) -- A woman died on Tuesday from a carbon monoxide incident caused by a faulty bathroom water heater in her Queens apartment, authorities said.
Officials responded to reports of a cardiac arrest at the victim's home on Leavitt Street near 35th Avenue in Flushing at around 8 p.m., after she had fallen unconscious.
Upon arrival, meters detected elevated levels of carbon monoxide were found coming out of the apartment, FDNY officials said.
The woman was rushed to Flushing Hospital, where she was pronounced dead, officials said.
Officials did not immediately release the victim's name.
The FDNY evacuated the woman's neighbors as the building was effectively vented until readings returned to normal.
Officials said there were smoke and carbon monoxide alarms present, but not operational.
Con Edison traced the leak to the bathroom's malfunctioning hot water heater, according to a company spokesperson.
