NEW YORK (1010 WINS) -- Gov. Andrew Cuomo on Friday directed state police to launch an investigation after someone tied a Confederate flag to the door of the Museum of Jewish Heritage in Manhattan.

Museum officials discovered the flag tied to the door of the institution early Friday morning.

In a statement released Friday evening, Cuomo called the Confederate flag “a repulsive symbol of hate,” adding that he was “disgusted” by reports of the incident.

“As we saw earlier this week when hate-filled mobs stormed our nation’s Capitol, violent white supremacists have been emboldened by Donald Trump’s divisive rhetoric — but we will not let them succeed,” he said.

“In New York, we will always defend against crimes that target New Yorkers for who they are or what they believe, and I am immediately directing the New York Police Hate Crimes Task Force to offer assistance in this investigation,” he added.

In his own statement, Mayor Bill de Blasio said New York City has “ZERO tolerance for acts of fascism and bigotry.”

“The Confederate flag is a symbol of hate,” he wrote. “There will be consequences for those responsible.”

The NYPD is also investigating the incident.
