NEW YORK (1010 WINS/WCBS 880) — The NYPD's Highway District's Collision Investigation Squad is investigating after a construction worker was fatally struck by an SUV driver on the Washington Bridge last week.
At approximately 10:21 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 2, police responded to a 911 call of a motor vehicle collision involving a pedestrian struck in the vicinity of Amsterdam Avenue in Washington Heights.
Upon arrival, officers observed 41-year-old Herb Henry Alesna, a construction worker, lying on the roadway, with trauma to the body.
EMS pronounced him dead at the scene.
Further investigation determined that a 2018 Dodge Durango SUV was traveling westbound on the Washington Bridge in the right lane and changed lanes when it collided with a 2015 Toyota Highlander SUV that was traveling westbound in the left lane.
After colliding with the Toyota, the Dodge traveled back into the right lane and collided with a parked 2010 International truck and also struck Alesna, who was standing outside the parked construction vehicle, officials said.
The 35-year-old man driving the Dodge and the 36-year-old man driving the Toyota were both uninjured and remained at the scene.
There have been no arrests made and the investigation remains ongoing.
