The unidentified, 37-year-old victim was allegedly painting the Manhattan side of the bridge at around 2 p.m. when he plunged and landed near FDR Drive.

A second worker, who also fell, suffered non-life threatening injuries, authorities said.

Police said the bridge's lower level was closed as authorities investigated.

"This is a terrible tragedy and the victim’s family and friends are in our thoughts," said Seth Stein, a spokesperson for the NYC Department of Transportation. "It is too soon to determine what led to this incident with our contractor."
