NEW YORK (1010 WINS) — A 52-year-old woman was killed by a police car in Queens after officers responding to an emergency slammed into a civilian car and careened into the bike lane where she was standing, according to police.
The NYPD SUV was responding to an assist officer call with lights and sirens active when the crash occurred near the intersection of Beach Channel Drive and Beach 32nd Street in Far Rockaway around 8:30 p.m., authorities said.
The police car, which was carrying four officers, was attempting to pass a 2020 Toyota Corolla driven by a 44-year-old woman, according to officials.
The civilian driver allegedly didn’t notice the police vehicle and attempted to make a left turn onto Beach 32nd Street as the cops tried to pass, causing the police to slam into the sedan.
The officer driving the vehicle reportedly lost control and ran down the woman who was standing in the bike lane before crashing into a parked car in the Beach Channel Shopping Center parking lot.
The woman suffered a head injury. EMS rushed her to Jamaica Hospital Medical Center, where she was pronounced dead.
The four officers were brought to Mount Sinai South Nassau Hospital with minor injuries. The civilian driver was not harmed.
Police have not yet filed any charges or issued discipline to the officers for the incident, which is under investigation.
