NEW YORK (1010 WINS) — Police shot a man who officers claim charged at them with a knife after stabbing a church security guard in Queens on Thursday, according to authorities.

The man allegedly stabbed a security guard in front of First Presbyterian Church on 164th Street near Jamaica Avenue during a service around 3:40 p.m. The man reportedly stabbed the guard in the stomach when he was confronted for acting erratically with a knife drawn.

The officers opened fire when the man allegedly charged them with the knife. They proceeded to taze him after he had been shot when he still refused to drop the weapon, police said.

Authorities said he has no criminal record and that police are looking into whether he was suffering from mental illness during the incident.

Both the man and the security guard were moved to a local hospital for treatment. Police said the security guard is “fine” and did not specify the condition of the knife-wielding man.

The shooting came just hours after police shot and killed a 78-year-old man who allegedly pointed his gun at them in Brooklyn.
