NEW YORK (1010 WINS) — CUNY is slashing budgets and implementing a hiring freeze across all of its colleges, Chancellor Felix Matos Rodriguez announced in a memo earlier this month.

The letter to college presidents and deans, which was obtained by the New York Post, said the 5% cuts are necessary to close a deficit brought about by declining enrollment.

Fall enrollment stood at just over 220,000 students, a 9% decrease from 2021 with 243,000 students enrolled.

A financial report released in January said CUNY is currently relying on federal stimulus money to make up for the deficit.

The report predicted expenditures would increase 5% this year with a 4% decrease in tuition revenue.

CUNY has been running ads highlighting the affordability of its schools in an attempt to bolster enrollment.
