NEW YORK (1010 WINS) – Amid a report Tuesday that former Gov. Andrew Cuomo is "preparing to launch" a campaign for New York City mayor, his spokesman told 1010 WINS the report is "premature" while also touting Cuomo's accomplishments while in office.

Speculation and reports have swirled for months that Cuomo is eyeing a 2025 run for mayor in his home city, but on Tuesday the Jewish Insider, citing three anonymous sources, went a step further, reporting the former governor is "now preparing to launch a mayoral bid soon."

"It's happening," said one of the sources, who was described as being familiar with the matter.

1010 WINS reached out to Cuomo's longtime spokesman Rich Azzopardi about the report, and he sent the following statement:

"This is all premature, but New Yorkers know it was Governor Cuomo who raised wages for millions of workers, codified Roe v. Wade into state law before the Supreme Court overturned it, put the strongest gun protections and paid family leave laws in the nation on the books and built projects previously declared impossible, such as the Moynihan train station, the new LaGuardia and JFK airports, the Second Avenue subway and the Kosciuszko Bridge, all while cutting taxes and reining in spending."

Polls released this fall indicate Cuomo—who resigned in August 2021 and was replaced by Gov. Kathy Hochul—is more popular than both Mayor Eric Adams and Hochul but that he also remains a divisive figure among voters after being elected to three terms as governor and leading the state's controversial COVID-19 response.

Adams faces a growing list of Democratic challengers two months after he was indicted on corruption charges. He has denied any wrongdoing and has said he intends to seek reelection. Like Cuomo, he is seen as a moderate Democrat among a field that includes many progressive-leaning candidates.

Among the Democrats running in the primary are city Comptroller Brad Lander, state Sen. Jessica Ramos and former state Assemblyman Michael Blake. There are also many potential candidates, including former city Comptroller Scott Stringer and state Sen. Zellnor Myrie. U.S. Rep. Ritchie Torres said this week he's exploring a run for governor but also hasn't ruled out a bid for mayor.
