NEW YORK (1010 WINS) – A Catholic deacon was punched in the face at random inside a Bronx subway station, according to police and multiple reports Wednesday.

Police said the 74-year-old was swiping his MetroCard at the Kingsbridge Road B/D station in Kingsbridge Heights just after 10 a.m. Tuesday when a man exiting through the turnstiles punched him on the right side of his face.

He began yelling for help and the attacker told him: "Don't shout. I just felt like punching someone."

The deacon suffered swelling and pain to the right side of his head and neck but refused medical attention at the scene, police said.

The victim is a deacon who serves at Our Lady of Mount Carmel in Belmont, police sources told the New York Post.

Police described the suspect as a light-skinned man in his 20s or early 30s. They said he was wearing a royal blue and white beanie, a mask, a sweater and a dark blue jacket.

Anyone with information is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-577-TIPS.
