NEW YORK (1010 WINS) -- An unidentified Rikers Island inmate died Sunday — the first to die in 2022 at the notorious prison, according to the Department of Corrections.

In 2021, 15 people died at or shortly after leaving Rikers. One more died in DOC custody before he arrived at the prison.
The DOC will carry out an investigation to determine the cause of death. The department said the detainee was declared dead after staff found him unresponsive.
The inmate had been at the prison since Sept. 5.
“We will work aggressively to determine the circumstances surrounding his death,” Corrections Commissioner Louis Molina told The New York Post. “My deepest sympathy goes out to the loved ones of this individual."
