NEW YORK (1010 WINS) — A dollar van driver was murdered in his vehicle on Sunday afternoon by a drive-by shooter who pulled up in a second dollar van and fired off shots, police said.

The 24-year-old victim was parked at 837 Utica Ave. in East Flatbush at about 12:55 p.m. when the second van approached and someone inside opened fire.

The van fled south on Utica Avenue before turning onto eastbound Snyder Avenue, police said. It has not yet been found.

The victim was taken to an area hospital in critical condition, but could not be saved.

It was not immediately clear if there were passengers in either van at the time of the shooting.

There have been no arrests and an investigation is ongoing.

Dollar vans are discounted shuttle vans, an informal type of public transportation that arose during the 1980 transit strike. They are not associated with the MTA or local government, but are particularly popular in areas lacking public transit, especially in the farther neighborhoods in Brooklyn and Queens.

The vans remain a staple in lower-income communities and pick up passengers at predesignated spots, typically charging $2 to $3 for rides.
