NEW YORK (1010 WINS) -- A Staten Island man was arrested and charged with driving while intoxicated after he crashed his BMW into the back of a stopped truck on the Gowanus Expressway late Wednesday night, killing the woman in his passenger seat, the NYPD said.
Mark Dookhan, 30, was driving a BMW sedan west on the Gowanus Expressway, near Exit 17 in Brooklyn, around 11:20 p.m. on Wednesday when he crashed into the back of a Freightliner truck that was stopped in traffic in a middle lane, police said.
Emergency responders found the woman in Dookhan's passenger seat, 30-year-old Staten Island resident Karen Diaz, unconscious and unresponsive inside the car, the NYPD said. She was pronounced dead at the scene, police said.
Dookhan was taken to a nearby hospital in stable condition, the NYPD said. He has been charged with driving while intoxicated, driving while intoxicated with a previous conviction within the past 10 years, and refusing to take a breath test, police said.
The 46-year-old man driving the truck Dookhan hit wasn't injured, the NYPD said. An investigation is ongoing.
