NEW YORK (1010 WINS/WCBS 880) – An East Harlem man died after being run over by a Tesla while lying in the roadway, the NYPD said.

On New Year’s Eve at about 4:34 p.m., police responded to a 911 call reporting a crash in front of 998 Third Avenue, in the 23rd Precinct.

Officers discovered a 49-year-old man at the scene with severe head and torso trauma, police said.

EMS rushed the victim to Mount Sinai Morningside, where he was pronounced dead, officials said.

The man was identified by police as Roberto Rodriguez, of East Harlem. His family has been notified of his passing.

A preliminary investigation by the NYPD’s Collision Investigation Squad determined that Rodriguez was lying in the roadway when a four-door 2023 Tesla sedan ran him over.

The Tesla was moving northbound on Third Avenue at the time of the collision, and the 25-year-old man driving initially continued moving, the investigation showed.

The driver did return a short time later and remained at the scene, police said.

No arrests have been made and the investigation is ongoing.
