NEW YORK (1010 WINS/WCBS 880) -- An EMT was recovering Thursday after she was repeatedly stabbed by an unhinged patient inside an ambulance on Manhattan's West Side, police said.

The EMT was tending to the man as the ambulance arrived at Mount Sinai West just before 9 p.m. Wednesday when he brandished a knife and stabbed her.

She was badly injured, suffering stab wounds to her abdomen and leg, according to police.

She was transported to Mount Sinai Morningside, where she remained in serious but stable condition Thursday morning. She's expected to survive.

"He got a knife! He got a knife!" a witness heard someone yell as the mayhem unfolded in the ambulance right outside the hospital.

"I saw the door open, and someone was running to the emergency room," the witness said. "The lady was on the floor. And then some of the workers went inside of the ambulance, and the guy inside was trying to force and get out."

Police took the suspect, Rudy Garcia, 48, into custody at the scene.

Garcia, of the Bronx, was charged with three counts of assault and criminal possession of a weapon.

Police said he's emotionally disturbed. He reportedly has at least eight prior arrests.
