NEW YORK (1010 WINS) -- The family of a 20-year-old woman who died after a police officer hit her with his vehicle in the Bronx plans to file a $20 million lawsuit against the NYPD, according to a report.
Sofia Gomez died on Oct. 8, three days after an NYPD officer in a marked car hit her as she was crossing Pelham Parkway, at Wallace Avenue, police said.
On Thursday, her family filed a notice of claim with the New York City Comptroller's Office indicating their intent to sue the city, the NYPD and the officer who hit her, the New York Post reported.
The officer, who had his sirens and lights on, ran a red light while traveling at around 60 mph before he hit Gomez, the outlet reported. He was responding to a report of shots fired on the Throgs Neck Bridge that turned out to be false, according to the outlet.
The family's attorney, Louis Grandelli, called surveillance video that captured the accident "absolutely horrifying."
"It shows Sofia walking across Pelham Parkway in the crosswalk with the pedestrian light in her favor. She's approximately halfway across the block, and she sees the police car coming towards her," he told the Post. "It's evident that she tries to run toward the sidewalk, but then she freezes, obviously out of fear."
The officer who hit Gomez isn't on patrol any longer, the outlet reported.
An NYPD spokeswoman told the outlet the department would "review the lawsuit if and when we are served."
