NEW YORK (1010 WINS) — An FDNY firefighter was indicted for stealing credit cards off a dead man’s body during a Manhattan EMS call, the Bronx District Attorney’s Office announced Tuesday.
Sylus McKenzie, 33, allegedly used the cards to buy or attempt to buy AirPods at Target and various items at a Food Bazaar supermarket and Sunoco gas station, officials said.
In total he managed to charge about $250 to the cards, and an additional $800 in purchases were blocked.
The four-year veteran of the department allegedly stole the cards while responding to reports of an unresponsive man at an apartment on East 50th Street near Second Avenue in Midtown on the night of Jan. 11, 2021.
The man was pronounced dead once first responders arrived, and multiple credit cards were later discovered missing from the apartment.
The next morning, someone used the cards for multiple purchases.
“The defendant, a firefighter in the New York City Fire Department, allegedly stole an American Express card and a Mastercard while responding to a 911 call at the Manhattan home of a patient who died,” said Bronx DA Darcel Clark. “A day later, the defendant allegedly went to various stores in the Bronx and made purchases using the stolen cards. These alleged actions are reprehensible, even more so because he is a member of the city’s Bravest and violated the public trust.”
McKenzie faces charges of grand larceny, identity theft and related offenses.
His next court date is slated for Sept. 7.
