NEW YORK (1010 WIN) -- A food cart worker was shot and wounded as he helped another vendor who was being robbed by a large group of people in Times Square on Wednesday morning, according to police and the victim's manager.
Investigators were questioning four persons of interest in the shooting, including the suspected shooter, officials said.
The victim, Ayaman Gzale, 29, was shot in the right arm just before 5 a.m. at West 47th Street and Seventh Avenue, according to the NYPD.
EMS rushed him to NYC Health + Hospitals/Bellevue, where he was recovering from the gunshot wound.
According to police, he'd been in a dispute with a number of people before he was shot.
The manager of Gzale's food cart told 1010 WINS that maybe 15 people were trying to rob another food cart a block away when Gzale ran over to help that vendor and got into a fight with the group.
"He tried to protect himself and his brother—the guys work in the nighttime—and a big fight happened," the manager said. "The guy, he have a gun, and he shoot like six bullets."
Cameras on the food cart weren't working at the time, but there are numerous other cameras in the area that investigators are reviewing.
