Former convict, 25, shot to death in Queens during argument

NEW YORK (1010 WINS/WCBS 880) – A former convict, 25, was shot to death during an argument outside of a Queens deli on Monday night, police said.

Joseph Valdez was in a heated argument with an unidentified man who pulled out a gun and shot Valdez on 21st St. and 41st Ave. in Astoria, police said.

Police responded to a 911 call about the shooting at around 10 p.m.

When they arrived at the scene, they found Valdez with multiple gunshot wounds on his arm and upper body.

The suspect had fled the scene.

Valdez was taken to New York-Presbyterian/Weill Cornell Medical Center where he was pronounced dead.

The NYPD revealed that Valdez had a criminal record, including a conviction for attempted murder in Manhattan in 2015, leading to a sentence of up to five years in state prison, according to the Daily News.

Following his release he was arrested in the Bronx for carrying a gun in August 2020, discovered during a jaywalking stop. He returned to prison, followed by parole a year later.

The investigation is ongoing.
