NYC comptroller teams up with community orgs to distribute free halal meals for Ramadan

Food
NEW YORK, NEW YORK - APRIL 01: Food is distributed by the Council of Peoples Organization (COPO), a Muslim non-profit, during a weekly food distribution to those in need and ahead of the Ramadan holiday on April 01, 2022 in the Brooklyn borough of New York City. COPO, which assists both Muslims and non-Muslims, sees on average over fifteen hundred people a week in need of food, a number that has held steady even as the pandemic eases. As the world's 1.6 billion Muslims prepare for the start of Ramadan, the most spiritual and revered holiday for Muslim’s, in many parts of the country there is still an acute need for food assistance. “The month of Ramadan is a time of generosity and reflection,” said the CEO of Islamic Relief USA Sharif Aly.  With all of the strife and suffering taking place presently, Muslims around the world have an opportunity, if not an obligation, during this holy month to further increase their spirit of altruism and make sacrifices in order to decrease the plight faced by so many of our most vulnerable populations.”

Ramadan starts Saturday night and will end May 1.

There are 1.4 million food insecure New Yorkers, according to a 2021 report commissioned by the Mayor’s office.

Food insecurity was badly exacerbated by the pandemic. The number of New Yorkers struggling to stay well fed increased by almost half since 2019.
