NEW YORK (1010 WINS) — A fugitive accused of fatally shooting an 18-year-old man in Brooklyn three years ago was extradited from Trinidad and Tobago to face charges, Brooklyn District Attorney Eric Gonzalez announced on Monday.
Anthony Regis-Ash, 24, was arraigned on Monday on an indictment charging him with two counts of second-degree murder, two counts of first-degree attempted robbery and two counts of second-degree criminal possession of a weapon in the Sept. 29, 2021 killing of Sharif Richards.
Regis-Ash’s girlfriend, 24-year-old Amari Harvey, is also charged with the crime. She was arrested at John F. Kennedy International Airport on Jan. 5, 2022, as she attempted to board a flight to Trinidad and Tobago.
According to the investigation, officers responded to Foster Avenue and East 80th Street in Canarsie on the night of the murder and discovered Richards. He was next to his crashed car with a gunshot wound to his chest.
Richards soon died of the wound, prosecutors said.
Police searched video cameras in the area to track Richards’ movements before the shooting and spotted Regis-Ash’s 2015 Nissan on East 78th Street between Farragut Road and Glenwood Road with a man and woman inside.
Video captured the woman, allegedly Harvey, walking down the block and getting into Richards’ 2007 Infiniti. A minute later the footage shows the man, allegedly Regis-Ash, leaning into Richards’ vehicle and trying to rob him.
Regis-Ash then allegedly shot Richards in the chest, prompting him to drive off and crash a few blocks away. Footage shows the woman exit the vehicle and walk off with the gunman.
Phone records and text messages reviewed as part of the investigation revealed prior communications between Richards and Harvey, as well as Richards and Regis-Ash.
A warrant for Regis-Ash’s arrest was issued in New York in October 2022, but he fled to Trinidad and Tobago in June 2021, before he could be charged.
United States law enforcement authorities requested his extradition in July 2024, and a local arrest warrant was issued by the Trinidad and Tobago government. Regis-Ash was arrested in the Cunupia area of Trinidad on Oct. 9, 2024, according to the U.S. Embassy in Trinidad and Tobago.
A warrant of removal was signed by Reginald Armour, attorney general and minister of legal affairs of Trinidad and Tobago, on Dec. 21, 2024, and he was soon extradited.
“This extradition is yet another example of the deep collaboration between U.S. and TT law enforcement,” U.S. Ambassador Candace Bond said. “The partnership between our nations has never been stronger or more fruitful, and results like this one demonstrate the importance of continuing to work together to support the rule of law and make our communities safer.”
Regis-Ash was ordered to be held without bail and will return to court on Feb. 7. If convicted, he faces up to 25 years to life in prison. Harvey is being held on $1 million cash bail or $2 million bond.
“The brutal ambush and murder of 18-year-old Sharif Richards in Canarsie was a heinous act of violence that shattered a young life and devastated a family,” Gonzalez said. “By extraditing the alleged perpetrator from Trinidad and Tobago, we reaffirm our unwavering commitment to ensuring that this kind of callous disregard for human life is met with the full force of justice.”
