NEW YORK (1010 WINS) – Governors Island will reopen to visitors on May 1.
Mayor Bill de Blasio announced the reopening at his Thursday briefing, calling the 172-acre island a “jewel of New York City.”
The island will open to the public on schedule this year after the opening was delayed more than two months last year amid the pandemic, de Blasio said.
For the first time, the island’s ferries will have two weekend and holiday stops in Brooklyn. The stops will be at Pier 6 in Brooklyn Bridge Park and Atlantic Basin in Red Hook.
The ferry rides will be free for NYCHA residents, seniors, children, IDNYC holders, current and former military personnel, and select community organizations, de Blasio said.
The Manhattan ferry runs from the Battery Maritime Building at 10 South St.
Tickets can be reserved starting next Monday at govisland.com.
Pandemic-related safety protocols will remain in place. Among the protocols are a ticket reservation system to manage capacity, face coverings, social distancing, and hand sanitizer and hand washing stations.
