Gunman opens fire on NYPD officers near Yankee Stadium; person of interest in custody

NEW YORK (1010 WINS/WCBS 880) – A person of interest was in custody Monday after a man shot at NYPD officers, who returned fire, just blocks from Yankee Stadium in the Bronx on Sunday afternoon, the NYPD said.

No one was struck by bullets in the broad-daylight shootout in the Concourse section, but two officers had to be hospitalized for tinnitus.

It all started when police responded around 3:10 p.m. to a call about a man with a gun at East 164th Street and Sheridan Avenue, about five blocks from Yankee Stadium.

When officers arrived, he opened fire on them, and they shot back, police said.

The suspect fled the scene northbound on Sheridan Avenue, while two officers were taken to NYC Health + Hospitals/Lincoln for ringing in their ears.

An investigation continued until after dark, with the NYPD's aviation unit assisting in the search for the suspect, Citizen video shows.

A person of interest was in custody with charges pending by Monday morning, though it wasn't immediately clear if that person is the suspected gunman or someone else.
